In 2017 we set off on what we termed a ‘grown up’ gap year which we saw as a time to discover what the next stage of our lives might entail. What we didn’t envisage was that within a year of returning to the UK Ian would be diagnosed with a muscle wasting disease that would render him increasingly disabled.
This blog sets out to describe this continuing journey of discovery, both the good and the bad, without a clear understanding yet of where that will take us.

Never have I experienced anything like those little creatures!!! I was bitten to pieces… you don’t need to say anymore….. I can sooo feel your pain!
Have an annoying sandfly bite on my hand and a couple on my upper arms this very moment, having canyonned down the Okuku river on Sunday afternoon. Pesky things! How can such a small creature be SO infuriating?!!
I followed Mike’s advice and travel with a ready supply of antihistamines. Certainly helps deal with the aftermath. I also invested in a large can of Raid to fumigate the van before we go to bed but not convinced sandflies have lungs with which to breathe the stuff in!
Just saw in the news of a storm heading ur way,,!!! Hope u r all safe/ in safe place.
THIS time we are well to the south of the storm. We were able to re -book our Doubtful Sound trip for tomorrow but wanted to avoid the same hazard as last time so decided to book into a commercial campsite which is just eight minutes WALK from where the trip departs!! Should make it this time ok (and we are far enough away from the cyclone for the trip not to be affected I hope)
I agree wholeheartedly. Surely no-one who has ever been to NZ can fail to agree!
