I am falling in love. I have had two love affairs previously but this new affair promises to be the most intense so far.
My first infatuation was with a striking, quirky, French mistress and our relationship was a tempestuous one lasting almost eight years. She was at times temperamental: she hated getting up on cold mornings (my neighbour said he could always tell when it was time to get up as he could hear me arguing with her outside) and she had a habit of stopping mid-journey and wouldn’t go any further until I had cleaned her carburettor: usually in the middle of rush-hour. She embarrassed me on a number of occasions but I loved her passionately, as did the children, although Sally was always rather more cool towards her.
The affair ended when I changed jobs and my new employers offered me a company car. It was a painful parting of the ways, not helped by the fact I would occasionally bump into her locally, and each time she simply ignored me. Did our time together mean nothing to her?
My second affair was disastrously short-lived, but no less intense. I fell in love the moment I saw her, but we weren’t right for each other. She wanted speed and adventure but I couldn’t live up to her expectations.
By the time we met I was beginning to struggle with a stiff neck and could no longer manage a drop-handle bike. We were great on the uphill parts of our adventure, and she could climb like a gazelle, but going downhill was torture. It was painful craning my neck far enough back to see where I was going and our relationship ended through my studied neglect. I stopped taking her out and she grew listless. It wasn’t her fault, it was mine – we had met too late in life.
And now I am embarking on my third affair. We were first introduced by Sally’s brother in-law and, although intrigued, I was sceptical to start with. How could a relationship with someone so far away (she comes from New Zealand) ever be successful?
However the more I watched her from afar the more I felt she was the one for me: after all she did have the same green livery that all my previous loves have had.
Designed by Omeo Technology (omeotechnology.com) she is a personal mobility device built on a Segway which has the potential to open up adventures that I thought had been taken from me. Her off-road abilities mean I can accompany Sally on walks (maybe even to the top of the Mendips) and rides on cycleways and we can explore towns and cities together too. However, I am going to have to get to know her a lot better before Sally will let us loose on an unsuspecting public. 😂
Watch this space to see how this love affair develops.

I wondered what Omeo was in Sally’s Whatsapp note.. now I know! Ian, you have a real gift of writing… u always have, n better yet of making people laugh out loud in their living room/sitting room! Thx!!
Great stuff ! Looking forward to the demo. Shame it’s not a two-seater !
J & P x x
Oh how I chuckled at this post! What a beautiful way with words you have Ian. Hoping, for all the right reasons, that this new party in your marriage can bring you newfound freedom with your longtime love! X
Most of my wheeled loves – from tricycle to MX5 – have been bright red.
How much of the control in the video above was with hand control, and how much with body shift?
Totally by leaning! I actually prefer it to the joystick control as it leads to a smoother ride.
Meant to be!
Glad that it’s finally arrived, and working. Would love to have a go, but looking forward to hearing about your adventures on it.
Re your previous loves; the 2CV is still the coolest wedding car ever, and you weren’t a bad chauffeur! As for the Giant, I have a fantastic relationship with a more rugged member of its family; one that keeps me in a Trance.
I am surprised you haven’t, at least, bought your one true love a lime green jacket for outings together. Perhaps you will😆
There is indeed a surprisingly green theme to all of your mechanical/transportational loves, Ian…and I’m not talking about environmental friendliness, at least not in the case of “Bamboo the 2CV”,
So pleased to see you in action and that Omeo arrived with you safely.
We are down under at present moving on to NZ on Monday – how apt!
Go safely…
Love the bins as an obstacle course! Hope you have great fun with Omeo.
