Love in the Time of Virus

(With apologies to Gabriel Garcia Marquez for the title of this blog!)

Today Sally and I celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary. Our 38th year of married life has been challenging following my diagnosis of muscular dystrophy last summer and the subsequent rapid decline in my mobility. We have had to come to terms with a new reality, to re-set our plans and aspirations. What seemed like a broad vista of options for things to devote our time to a year ago has narrowed considerably, and even more so in these current weeks when the whole world is left wondering what the future will look like.

The transition over the past year has been accompanied by tears and a sense of bereavement but throughout all this my wife has stood resolutely by my side, encouraging me to see how blessed we are and to help me dream new dreams. I am not totally convinced by her idea that we could use the money we received from the sale of our narrowboat to ‘buy a camper van, drive to interesting places and make a cup of tea’ but who am I to question her logic? 😂

Sally the shepherd

As we all face uncertain times let’s learn to draw strength from those that love us. Maybe this is a time to question the dreams we held previously and to instead agree new priorities for the way we should live our lives going forward. Certainly the world is never going to be the same again.

Keep safe everyone.

  1. Happy anniversary – hope you get to celebrate somehow today..

You are so right – evaluating our dreams and ability to adjust on life’s journey is so important and finding hope in new ways xxx

    Love you both 💓

  2. Happy Anniversary both! You are 7 months in front of us for our 38th!
This message sent from the skies on BA16 over Australia en route Singapore, at the curtailed end of a Southern Hemisphere trip. NZ effectively closed its borders a day or two before our journey there was to commence. Much rearrangement / admin to get this far!
90 minutes transit at Singapore then onwards to LHR.
As you say the whole world has changed.
We are bracing ourselves for a brave new world upon return.
    Best wishes to you
    D.

  3. Happy Anniversary, your positivity is infectious, thank you both for your example and choice to live life to the full.

  4. May God richly continue to bless you two wonderful people! Happy Anniversary!! hugs and love, t & k

  5. Congratulations on your 38 years. We were hoping to see you this northern summer, but travel is in question right now. It will happen eventually! Camper van and a cup of Tea? I think you should do it.

  6. Happy Anniversary Ian and Sally. You loved your camping van adventures over here in NZ so I am sure you will love them in UK. For the first time in a long while, NZ now feels a long way away from so many of our friends and family. Kia Kaha – be strong, keep going.
